Welcome to Tlemcen
Tlemcen is a city located in the north of Algeria. It is famous for its Moorish buildings, such as the 11th-century Great Mosque with its tall minaret and elaborate mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca). The mausoleum of Sidi Boumediene, a 12th century Sufi master, is a place of pilgrimage. Its adjacent mosque is an example of Almoravid architecture, with its carved stucco panels. In the city center, the El Mechouar palace dating from the 12th century, is protected by high walls.
